Cas held their Black & White Ball to celebrate the end of their 25th year at the Hotel Al Andaluz in Maro on Saturday 26th November. The event was attended by over 100 people who raised in excess of 2100 Euros. Entertainment was provided by Andy Time and Mark Peters of Global Radio. A grand Raffle was held and the main prize a flat screen TV was one by Mick Stevens. Our thanks to our main Sponsors for the evening The Real Estate Agency and the Clinica San Fernando. Charity Dinner Dance

A charity dinner dance was held at the Hotel Andalus, Maro on Friday 2nd December in aid of Cas and Cudeca. The event was well attended and everyone wss entertained by Andy Time. Cas received a donation of 300 Euros from the raffle that was held. Our thanks to Jan & Dave who organised the evening.

Competa christmas party

Cas is holding a Competa Christmas Party at La Roca in Competa on Saturday 17th December at 8.00pm. A full Barbecue with wine will be served inside. Entertainment will be provided by Andy Time. Tickets 15 Euros can be obtained from the restaurant. Booking essential. Come along and join in the feative spirit.

A rather down beat news street this time. The financial situation is hitting us hard. We do not have sufficient funds to take dogs into kennels so once again we are totally reliant in the goodwill of our foster families. As you can see from our website the animals keep coming. Many abandoned in bins and in the campo, left running loose when their owners return to their country. On the positive side we are still homing well, particularly in Germany and Holland. This month we have homed 27 dogs plus numerous puppies that never reached the website but were homed direct from our fosterers.
The other downside is finding people to foster cats. Sue is inundated and people do not seem to want to foster cats, perhaps because they tend to wander. If you can help please call Sue on 952531587/691706434

We are also desperate for people to tow our trailer to the Nerja market on Sundays, 8.30 am start. return to collect 1.30pm. If you can help phone Richard on 659458020. We need fundraisers urgently as Mike retires at the end of the month. We need people prepared to organise our events, Quizzes etc. We are lucky to have a group working with us around Perriana and of course Maureen fronm La Xana and Andrea who always comes forward to help.

I am afraid that the news for this month is rather depressing. The amount of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens abandoned has increased dramatically. In the space of the last week we have has requests for 17 foster places. This is usually possible but not with 24 hour notice.

The help and support we receive from the other societies here in Spain and our Dutch and German collegues has been outstanding. About 30 dogs have moved to Germany & Holland this month alone.
We are delighted that the difficulties taking animals to the UK have been relaxed. It is now only a three week delay. Please check it out on the Defra website.

We are moving all our dogs from kennels as we can no longer afford to pay the bills. The only dogs that will be in kennels will be sponsored places from our supporters. We do ask that you donate to this scheme as we know that sometimes fostering is not an option.
We are of course still in need of foster places, please think about it. It is often the best solution for the animals. Our bigger dogs are a problem usually needing Campo places, preferably fenced. Thank you all who offer to foster. There are nearly 60 families and all are full. Sometimes with more than one animal !

Our funding has taken a big dip with the recession and Mike O'Brien will be retiring from fundraising at Xmas and Richard from the Treasurers position.
I intend to hold an open meeting for people to come forward and offer support for fundraising. Anything will be considered! Our markets bring in a steady income and we need more people to run the village markets. If people formed small groups to fundraise together it would be very helpful.
We are running several quiz evenings and are always looking for new ideas. Please come forward to talk about it. Contact me or Richard on 952037095 or 659458020.

The positive side at the moment is that the younger Spanish people are treating the animals with much more care and respect, although the Town Halls need a neutering programme. The costs are high for vaccinations and neutering. If anyone has ideas for running a scheme to raise money for this please speak up.!

CAS NEEDS PEOPLE URGENTLY

A number of our key people are retiring at the end of the year (everyone is getting older) so please come forward if any of the following positions interst you.

Treasurer
We will need a new Treasurer from 1st January 2012. This position requires the person to be a Spanish Resident and have a good knowledge of accountancy procedures, preferably computer literate (we currently use Microsoft Money) and be prepared to give monthly financial reports to the committee and prepare the annual accounts for submission to our auditors. In addition money with have to be collected from the Cas shop in Nerja weekly and banked together with any funds raised from our events. Invoices received to be paid monthly.

Fundraiser
This position available from 1st January 2012 requires the person to take overall responsibility for the fundraising necessary to produce the funds necessary to ensure Cas continues to help the abandoned animals that come into our care.
This involves organising our monthly events together with our two major dinner/dances in June and November plus the two annual Scruffs Dog Shows. They would also be responsible for obtaining sponsorship for the major events from local businesses. This will not be a “Cold start” as the person currently has many contacts and a well organised system.

President
The current President will be retiring in March 2012. Her main role apart from “President’s Duties) is to be responsible the rehoming of the dogs in our care and organising the many fosterers we have. This mainly involves telephone and email contact, responding to general enquiries from our press announcements and our Website from which the majority of enquiries are received. Also dealing with telephone calls received concerning dogs lost or abandoned. Once again we have a tried and tested system for dealing with most situations together with overseas contacts with whom many animals are rehomed. We currently home between 40/50 per month.

In all cases we would like people to come on board as soon as possible so that they can work with the retiree to ensure a smooth handover. If you are interested in any of these positions please contact our existing President Wendy Thorne on 952037095/660271984 or any committee member,

TIME FOR ANOTHER UPDATE

We are still homing 30/40 dogs each month and Sue is doing well homing her cats and kittens.
The puppy situation is still dire. They are being dumped every day, the bins being the favourite place for us. It ia a nightmare. We can only ask people to look after them for us until they are old enough to re home. We know it is a committment but we have nowhere to put them. Thank you all who help.
Our fundraisers are working flat out, the car booters do a fantastic job. All the items donated have to be collected from the givers and taken to where we sort it all and then taken to the msrkets for selling. Our regular markets are in Nerja (Sundays), Trapiche (Tuesdays) and Almunecar (Sundays).These produce our only regular income.
We always need more helpers in Nerja. If you can help please call Sheila on 66524638 We also need people to collect goods for us and take our trailer to the Nerja market if you have a car with a towbar.
Of course I need to beg for more foster places as our finances are severely reduced since the recession. We can no longer afford kennel fees. Many people have generously paid for a week or two if the dog is reserved to travel. Our problem is that if they are to go to Germany or Holland they must be fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped which all costs money.

Fostering can be short or long term. We have dogs and cats waiting now, that we cannot take off the street as we have nowhere to place them. MAKING A DENUNCIA

There are increasing numbers of animal cruelty cases and many people are suffering not knowing how and where to denounce.

1. Go to your local GUARDIA CIVIL NOT The Local or National Police. The Cuartel of the Guardia Civil.
2. Go with as much information as you can. Names. Addresses, Map for them to be able to easily investigate and reasons for the Denuncia.
3. If you don’t speak Spanish get someone who does to go with you ot contact your local animal welfare society for help or information.
4. The Guardia Civil will give you a copy of the Denuncia and their copy will be given to Seprona the division of the Guardia Civil who will investigate.
5. ONLY SEPRONA will investigate
6. With your copy of the denuncia it can be followed up later. Don’t forget animals have laws to protect them from cruelty. They can’t complain if they have no food or water, no shade from the sun or shelter from rain or tied up on short chains and forgotten. But we can speak for them.

Apologies for the earlier incomplete blog

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

We are always concerned when we hear the question "What do Cas do with all the money raised". We struggle every month with our vet bills which are incurred from treating injured,starved or abandoned animals. If they are to go to one of our contact charities in Holland or Germany they must be vaccinated and neutered. All of this costs money. We must also vaccinate all animals before they go to foster families.
Without our foster families, who help us without complaining, even when they have the animal longer than planned, many thanks.

The photos below will I hope show you some of the injuries and maltreatments animals suffer. This cost has to be borne by Cas and other charities like La Xana who work with us and help with the costs.

We are sorry to have to inform you that Brian Carter, Diana's husband died recently. We will all miss his sense of humour. Our best wishes and thoughts go to Diana. At Diana's request friends were asked to donate to Cas rather than send flowers. Donations totalling 340 Euros were received.

COMPETA SUMMER BARBECUE
The barbecue was held at La Roca's in Competa on Friday 15th July and was well attended. Everyone was entertained by Andy Time and there was a surprise visit from " Elvis" The evening raised a total of 380 Euros.

From January 2012 DEFRA are changing the rules for the rabies blood tests for animals going into the UK from EU countries. You now only have to wait 21 days instead of 6 months.

Kurt and Laura Wetherby held a barbecue in aid of Cas to celebrate American Independence Day at Seacrest Kennels.
The event was well attended and everyone was entertained by Bobby Mac who donated his services to Cas for the evening.

THE POWER OF THE INTERNET
Cas were donated 3 Antique Childrens Books. The Prize 1894, 1902 and 1905 published by Wells Gardner Darton of London.
All were in good/fair condition with excellant illustrations. We placed ad on Digame asking if their were any collectors who would be interested in purchasing them. To our surprise we received a response from someone in Australia who agreed to buy them for 120 Euros plus the postage cost of 38 Euros

A NOTE FROM WENDY (CAS PRESIDENT)

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who helped us foster or rehome Bobs 15 dogs. All our now safely homed or waiting with fosterers for new families.
Please think ahead when taking a dog or cat. Get them ready to travel to the UK even if you have no plans to go back. Situations change and it takes 6 months after the blood test before they can travel. For Cas it is an ongoing nightmare as people believe we can find a 6 month foster home for cats and dogs easily. This is not so and people must be prepared to pay for food and veterinary fees incurred plus repatriation costs to the UK.

Please be aware of poison. They are laying again at this time of year. Also the Rangers who are driving in the campo saying everyone should keep their dogs on a lead and trying to fine people. We have been unable to verify anything about them or the law that says all dogs should be on a lead. Should you see them or be confronted by them. please contact Cas.They usually carry guns which we believe is also illegal.

CAS HELP NEEDED
The Costa Animal Society is seeking a volunteer who would be prepared to help the President Wendy Thorne in the re homing of the many Dogs & Puppies that come into their care.

Cas has a proven and tested system for finding homes for the animals involving contact with other overseas charities and responding to enquiries from the general public and our website. We also have a network of fosterers who are prepared to look after animals until a home is found.

Most of the work can be done from home via telephone or email (access to a computer is essential) and although time consuming it can be very rewarding.

The first of the SCRUFFS annual dog shows was held on Saturday 21st May at the Pavo Real Restaurant in Competa. The event was well attended with some 49 dogs being entered into the various classes.The event raised a total of 1875 Euros towards Cas Funds.

Just to keep you all posted!
The last few weeks have been horrendous. We have available at the moment 52 puppies. You can imagine the difficulties we have, nowhere to put them. We are reliant on our fosterers and the goodwill of the people who find them. Please bear with us.

We are managing to find homes but that does not happen overnight. Added to this problem we have the day to day abandonados still coming in. Due to lack of funds we are not kenneling the dogs but again relying on goodwill and our fosterers.
The finnancial situation is still fraught. We have moved most of our dogs from the kennels. Our overseas parners have worked miracles and we are eternally grateful. However everyone is working hard to raise more money. The recession has dried up most of our donations.
We have fourteen dogs to home urgently before June 1st so please look at our website www.casnerja.org Bob is cuurently looking after these dogs-All contact detaila are on the website. We also have a large selection of older dogs. All left behind when their owners left them behind.
Sue is doing an amazing job with the cats. Contact 691706434/952531587. She ie rehoming many kittens and older cats. We also need people to care for the cats and dogs waiting to travel to the UK. Remember it is six months from the date of the rabies blood test before they can travel to the UK. It is best to get an animal prepared even if you think you will never go back to live in the UK. Sometimes fate takes a hand.

We are always wanting more helpers for the Office, Car Boots, and people to transport animals to the airport to catch their flights for their overseas new homes.

The Cas AGM was held recently at the Nerja Club Hotel in Nerja.Wendy Thorne was elected as President, Richard Thorne as Treasuer and Vera Newing as Vice President.All other committee members were re-elected to serve for another year.

Set out below are the comments made bt the President and the Treasurer'

Good afternoon
Thank you for coming today. Before we start I will ask Diana to give you the Membership details.
I don’t think I need tell you that this has been a difficult year both financially and administratively wise. I am sure you all heard that the difficulties within the committee arose from whether it was viable to transfer our Society into another. The committee voted against and there was of course a fall out.
Since then we have consolidated ourselves and increased our homing rate to around 40/60 dogs a month going to Holland, Germany and here in Spain.
To ease the financial position we are trying to move most of our dogs from kennels to foster accommodation. We are totally dependent on our fosterers and are extremely grateful to them. We have around 60 foster families not all operational at once. Some come for the summer some for the winter, so it is always fluid.
The cats are still needing attention. Mike feeds in places everyday. Sometimes running gauntlet of the gardeners. Heike and Hilde are also long term feeders on Burriana ,Supersol area and around the Nerja club Hotel. We have had support from Sue Baldwin our official Cat Woman and Maureen of Xana.Both have been very generous with financial help for the cat spaying programme. Sue’s rehoming record is excellent even though she is inundated with tiny kittens.
The website is vital to our homing success and it currently being revamped, so please be patient.
We are exceedingly lucky to have Mike O’Brien fundraising for us. He must be the best finder of sponsors in the area. Thank you Mike.
Richard works tirelessly on the accounts. Hopefully the recession will ease and our donations will come back again.
One of the main areas for concern is the lack of committed helpers. We need younger folk for the airport runs to get the dogs abroad and of course people to run the small village markets and anyone with ideas for fundraising.

Good afternoon

You will all have received a copy of the Audited accounts for the year ending 31st

December 2010. I think I should explain in case it is not clear why our accounts

showed an operating Balance of over 42000 Euros. This was due to the fact that the

sale of our office was Completed on the 31st December and the way in which the

transaction was undertaken with the Notary ie part cash and part offset against our

debt

These funds were therefore paid back in early January to clear our Debt with our Vet.

If you strip out the income received from the sale of the office you will note that in

2010 despite all the efforts made we only raised 65000 Euros against 96000 in 2009.

In the first 3 months this year we raised 14600 Euros.

We are therefore still in a very precarious financial position and the outlook is very

concerning. Suffice it to say the effects of the current economic climate continue to

effect us with very limited donations being received and a downturn in support for our

fundraising activities.

I don’t propose to go over all the discussions we had at the EGM in October but

suffice it to say that since then we have made every effort to reduce costs. We have

stopped placing any more animals in kennels, other than overnight emergencies and

rely heavily on our fosterers. The number of animals in kennels have been reduced

but not to the level that is manageable financially and we have to continue our efforts

to move animals out of kennels, if we are to survive. This has proved to be much

more difficult than expected particularly with the larger and older dogs who no one

seems to want. As Wendy has explained we are still homing 40/50 dogs per month but

we have close to 200 animals on the website at any one time and as the website these

days is the main contact with the public ,those wanting an animal have a very wide

choice.

We are currently up to date with our vet bills and these have been reduced to around

800 Euros per month but need to be reduced further. This is proving difficult with the

demands placed on us by the general public who more often than not if you don’t

agree to help just dump the animal, which then ends up back with us.

We are also up to date with the rent payments on the office.

We are however not up to date with our kennels bills and this debt will increase until

more are rehomed. In my opinion if we can continue to reduce the number of animals

in kennels to an acceptable level then we will be able to repay this debt during the

course of this year and the whole situation becomes manageable.

Mike our main fundraiser is doing everything he can to raise money but the truth is

that apart from our four main annual functions, Scruffs and the big dinner dances

which are well attended and still produce substantial funds it is proving very difficult

to run monthly fundraisers due to the financial climate. As with Donations

sponsorship if available is half what is was 2 years ago.

Our main regular income is currently being obtained from the four car boot sales we

now run in Nerja, Trapiche, Almuncar and Torrox. These are doing very well and you

will have noted that we raised 17000 Euros last year. Ideally we should operate more

car boots in different locations but it is a question of finding people to run them.

We have revamped the shop and sales are improving but need to increase further.

To summarize and without being negative Cas is in a very difficult financial position

and it is difficult to see how currently matters can be improved within the current

framework. If we can get the majority of animals out of kennels then I believe the

finances are manageable and this is the key. Beyond that we need more people to

fundraise for us. Too often people come forward but when they find out what is

involved they don’t appear to be prepared to make the commitment.

Cas would like to thank the Gins Golf Society and its members who raised 150 Euros towards Cas funds over the Christmas period by making donatins rather than sending Christmas cards.

"The El Valle Drama group held a production of their latest comedy "LAST PANTO IN LITTLE GRIMLEY" on 28th & 29th January at El Trapiche Restaurant The production was a total sell out on both nights and by all account was a rip roaring success.Even at rehearsals the staff at the restaurant kept creeping in for a sneak preview but goodness knows what they made of the pantomine horse and cat and our good old pantomine dame, as pantomines are not a common thing in Spain. A jolly good pantomine sing along was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. Despite illness the cast and crew put on an admiral performance directed by Jenny Woodhead. More Cas News! To let you know that we now attend four markets, Nerja, Almunecar, Trapiche and Torrox Pueblo. We are still asking for more Bric a Brac and other item to sell. Most urgent is for all of you who are Jam or Pickle makers as the market at Torrox Pueblo can only sell home made produce or hand crafted goods. This includes local paintings and locally written books . If you can help call Sue Anderson on 952 535 416.

We would also ask all of you who find dogs to check for a microchip. We have just discovered that one of our rescue dogs who was lost a year ago and another Pointer found had a microchip and he had been stolen 3 years ago. Sometimes the chips "Move"in the dog. So it is a good idea to use the reader all over the dogs body.

We have been asked to take part in a monthly auction to be held at the Boatyard Bar. This may help us to sell some of the larger items we get that can't be transported to the Boot sales.

Any rumours you may have heard that we apparently owe the Donkey Sanctuary 4000 Euros are completely untrue. Neither charity has any financial dealing with each other. We just try and help each other with the animals.

I would like to begin with a big thank you to those that donated to us via Paypal. Very many thanks.
We are still without sufficent funds and are now trying to rehome or foster dogs that are in the kennels, hence cutting costs. Many of them have been there for a long time and we operate a policy never to put a dog down unless the vet advises it is necessary. Some of them may be judged "not so beautiful" but you can judge above. All these dogs are at El Perrotel in Benejaraffe and all are big dogs. In the near future we will feature some of the smaller ones. Please contact me if you would like to know more about any of these dogs.

The glut of puppies continues. We are desperate for people with land and stables to look after them until they are homed.

Cas are revamping the office in Nerja and looking for more volunteers to staff it. The hours wikk be flexible. We hope to generate more sales and more money !

Yesterday four more dogs, Blanca, Pillar. Lily and Olive safely arrived in Holland to be met by their new owners. Olive became the 250th dog to be rehomed in the manner, another milestone in the joint cooperation of the charities

Cas are in the process of revamping their Shop/Office in Calle Ferran, Nerja. As a result we are seeking more volunteer staff to run the shop which will open daily from 10.00am til 2.00pm. This will be on a rota basis and we are hoping to have 2 staff on duty daily. CAS IN CASH CRISIS
As the Costa Animal Society enters its 25th year, it finds itself, like many other animal charities, under severe financial pressure due to the general economic downturn. Over the last five years, CAS has spent over 125,000 euros on veterinary fees for treating the animals in its care, plus over 220,000 euros in kennel fees.

The charity receives no government grants and no one within CAS is paid; all volunteer their time and expertise. The only source of income is fund-raising events and donations.

In 2010, CAS found itself with increasing debt and, as a result, has sold its charity shop and office, and taken a lease back on the premises. This has cleared the majority of the debt but it means that, regrettably, fewer animals can be taken into care, other than those which can be placed with fosterer families, to reduce kennel fees.

CAS will also have to limit the number of animals treated at the vets, except in emergencies, and the organisation can no longer automatically pay for vaccinations and spaying. Instead, it will be asking for substantial donations towards these costs. It is hoped these measures will last for only a limited period and that the financial situation will improve during 2011.

CAS’s website, www.casnerja.org, contains details of over 200 dogs and cats looking for new owners and CAS continues to re-home between 40 and 50 animals every month. Unfortunately, the number being abandoned does not reduce.

CAS fundraisers are working as hard as ever in an effort to raise money and the group is expanding its presence at local markets in an endeavour to increase our income. However, help from the general public is needed, either by assisting with fundraising or by making donations. Every cent helps.

MONEY SITUATION

Not improving. We would like people to volunteer to foster some of our dogs that are in kennels and thereby reduce our costs.

Last month with the help of the Dutch and German charities we homed over 60 dogs with a good percentage of these also being homed in Spain.

Sue Anderson is doing a good job recruiting people to hold more markets for us in the campo villages. Marjorie and Colin are now at the Almunecar every Sunday which is very profitable. Nerja continues to be the jewel in the market crown. Without Sheila and Ruth who sort the donated goods every week and organise the helpers every Sunday it would be very difficult. We still need more helpers who are prepared to get up early on Sunday mornings. Also someone to tow the trailer on a rota basis.

In common with other societies Cas is experiencing financial problems due to the current economic climate with income being reduced from donations and our fundraising activities. We do not receive any government funding.
As a result Cas regrets, that for the time being, we are only able to pay for emergency animal treatment. We hope this action will only be for a limited period and that matters will improve during 2011.
In the meantime our vets, Clinica San Fernando will give Cas prices for animals once authorized by us.

We will still be running our Cat Neutering programme. Many urbanisations are using our collecting tins to raise money specifically for their cats. More info on this or to receive a collecting tin call Wendy on 952037095

MARKETS
We are trying to encourage more people to run weekly markets in the small outlying villages. This is proving to be very profitable. If you think you can help phone Sue Anderson 952535416 OR Wendy 952037095.
We currently have stalls at 3 different markets, Nerja, Trapiche and Almunecar. We always need unwanted goods to support these markets. If you have anything to donate then they can be left in the Cas office or collections can be arranged by telephoning Richard on 952037095/659458020.
We also need more people to help at the Nerja Sunday Market. In particular we need a man with a 4x4 and towbar to deliver the trailer by 8.30 am. Early risers! We are trying to organise a rota so it would not be every week. Phone Richard 952037095 or Sheila on 665246387.

LIVING IN THE CAMPO

Please be aware of poison and snares/traps in the Campo. We have had animals horribly injured in the last few weeks. ALWAYS report snares and traps to us. They are illegal and we will pass any info to Suprona the animal division of the Guardia Civil.

FOSTERERS

More fosterers are always needed. We find this better for some animals and it reduces our kennel costs, which we really cannot afford at the moment. A big thank you to all who help us and our kennel owners who are so supportive.

MALAGA AIRPORT RUNS

Many of our animals are homed in Germany and Holland. As a result we need people who would be prepared to transport the dogs to the Airport to catch the prearranged flights. If you could help please call Wendy 952037095 or Simone 619903815 for an informal chat. We need people to go perhaps once a month.

We are always in need for more helpers in a number of areas, so if you have any spare time please make contact. In particular we need more fundraisers to work with our team and people who would be prepared to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations we have. IF YOU FIND A DOG PLEASE get it checked for a microchip. This saves time and returns it to its owner, If it does not have a microchip, please let Cas know, we will then look for a suitable foster place until it is rehomed. We will need digital phographs and all information on the dod. We cannot put a Great Dane in a flat !

PREPARING ANIMALS TO TRAVEL TO THE UK

Please remember it takes 6 MONTHS for cats and dogs to be allowed into the UK. So it is advisable to prepare even if you do not intend to travel soon. The vaccinations are needed to include Rabies, then three weeks later the blood test and the travel date is 123 days after the blood test. The worming etc is done prior to the travel date. There is nothing you can do to shorten the timing, hence many heartbreaks if the pet has to be left behind. Contact your vet for orgcosta involved. PROBLEMS WITH FERAL CATS.
Most urbanisations have excess feral cats. To combat this problem we need to get them neutered. The recession has made it impossible for Cas to fund this. Our vet Expedito at Clinica San Fernando in Nerja will give a reduced rate. We would ask you all to take our cans to collect money specifically for the cats on your urbanisation or campo area. This has proved very successful in many areas. We ask one person to be responsible for the cans in your area and deal directly with the vet. Mario in La Vinuela also offers reduced rates for Cas referred animals. People seem happier to give when theu know exactly where the money goes.

Letter from the President

I am sure you are aware that there have been significant changes within Cas. The catalyst was the difference of opinion around Cantalobos a purpose built facility for animals above La Herradura. We were offered the opportunity to run it. It is an excellent place, however Cas did not feel we had the people or funding to take on such a large commitment, hence the committee differences. Jane Kirk stepped down as President and others left also.

Now on to our funding situation. I am sure you all read the report for the EGM and the motion to sell our asset, the Cas Office. This was approved by a substantial majority and is now in the hands of the lawyers. The price paid will clear our debts and we are taking a lease back on advantageous and flexible terms.

This enables us to continue. We still have outstanding debts with our kennel owners but anticipate being able to clear these over the next few months. Contrary to rumours the kennel owners have NEVER lined their pockets at Cas expense, they have always given us a fair rate and take animals in without charge in an emergency. We must remember it is their livelihood and I am personally grateful for their support and understanding.

The economic climate means we are having to work at twice the speed to bring in funds and reduce our costs. We already have over 60+fosterers who are looking after our dogs until homes are found. Thank you all so much.

The newly vamped website www.casnerja.org with Dave Jamieson as our webmaster has produced dividends.We will also shortly have the website in Spanish.The last 3 months we have homed around 120 dogs. Of course many do go to

Germany

and Holland. They pay for the tests needed to travel and the travel expenses. We are now also sending dogs to

Denmark

and

Austria

. All the charities we use do home visits and follow ups. The level of homing within

Spain

has risen, albeit with Brits and Germans as the biggest group.

I feel I must give thanks to our hardworking fundraisers led by Mike O’Brien who never stops thinking up new ideas, We have the Xmas do’s in Competa and Nerja so to book your table give him a call on 952526312. Sheila McAslam and Ruth Barker who sort all the goods received for the Sunday Car Boot which produces vital funds and all the people who come along to help them. Dave,Heike, Carol,Caroline and Maivi. Sue Anderson who organises her stall at Trapiche and the book sales at various cafes. All together they are working wonders to keep Cas afloat.

Also a big thank you to Richard who has taken over once again as Treasurer (he thought he had retired) but he is doing a great job trying to keep us all in line.

Finally we must not forget our Secretary Diana Carter, who is now also managing the office and the staff who turn up daily to help us week after week.

I am sure you all know that Sue Baldwin is our “Cat Woman” she is seriously overstretched and anyone who would be prepared to help please contact her on 952531587 or 691706434. More helpers are needed in many areas so if you know anyone who would be prepared to help us contact me on 952526312 or Vera on 952529670 or 680315880 . We are a social crowd, any age welcome!.

Bruno, Fatima,Kira, Negri, and Oscar were brought to Amsterdam by Jeroen yesterday. Jeroen is a volunteer from Dutch charity HzH (Hond zoekt Huis) and he took an early flight in Amsterdam yesterday morning to pick up 5 dogs and flew back with the dogs to Amsterdam the same day (!) How more commitment can you ask for?

Nerja's dogs raise cash for CAS

The Costa Animal Society’s annual dog show, Scruffs Nerja, has raised over 2,000 euros towards the charity’s continuing work with abandoned and homeless animals. This was the event’s 11th year and the was the most successful ever.

Dozens of dogs and their owners made their way to Scruffs which was held on October 23 on the municipal market site at Almijara II, by kind permission of Nerja Town Hall. The start of proceedings had to be delayed while a long queue of hopeful dogs was processed and each participant given an entry number. Finally, there were an amazing 78 entries in the 11 classes which were judged by a panel of four experts and enthusiasts.

CAS President Wendy Thorne thanked all of those who attended the event and the volunteers who organised
it. “Without their wonderful support, events like Scruffs just would not be possible to put on,” she said.

A total of 2,300 euros was raised and CAS wants to say a big thank you to Nerja Town Hall for its help, and to all those who helped through sponsorship: Stephen Todd, Bar Genesis, Clinica San Fernando, Costa del Sol News, Decotta McKenna y Santafe, Dream España, El Perrotel Kennels, Seacrest Kennels, Secure Solutions (formerly Spanish Solutions), Streetwise Magazine, Transfer People, Verity Hair and Beauty, and Weston Kennels.

August successes

Cas has recently had their website www.casnerja.org updated and our thanks to Dave Jamieson who has worked so hard over the last few weeks.

The new site has been a tremendous sucess with some 34 dogs being rehomed in August direct from the site. In addition 14 puppies have been rehomed together with a further 8 dogs homed privately or from the kennels. This makes a total of 56 dogs homed during August which is traditonally a difficult month.

Cas are also trying to revitalise our fundraising efforts in the Competa. If anyone is prepared to help raise more funds or help in the Competa area please contact Wendy on 952037095.

Black Jack, Paddy & Puppies

Paddy is a male lab cross, about a year old. He has a typical inquisitive lab personality who loves people and is friendly with other dogs. He is a bit food aggressive but we are working on this by feeding him with multiple dogs in a large space and he is improving. He is fine with cats and just needs a bit of training to stop him jumping up. He has lived in a house before so he should be house trained.

Black Jack was found living rough on the street. He is 4 years old, weighs 9 kilos, is 32 cm tall and is in good health.

He has had a rough time so is a little nervous, but is quiet and likes other dogs.

Jorja was born on May 11, 2010. She sits, comes, stays and goes down on command. She really wants to please, you can see it in her eyes and she likes to lie close to our feet when she sleeping.

Denzil was foundtied up in an abandoned Cortijo. He had a dislocated hip and was dragging himself across the floor. After a difficult rescue and three days in the vets he can now get up and walk again, but is a bit wobbly. He is a German Shepherd mix and is 10-12 years old and will need tablets such as cod liver oil for his joints for most of his life.

Maddy is a loving dog to her family. She was abandoned as a pup in a garden and is now nearly 4 years old and about 30 kg. House trained, enjoys being groomed, likes to play, reasonably obedient.

Feeding puppies from birth

Notes for feeding puppies from birth

Always use puppy milk formula obtained from the vet, never human baby food or other animal’s milk
Use puppy bottles from the vet but ensure the hole in the teat is not too large (milk should not flow freely but drip from the teat)
If the puppy is unable to suck, use a syringe from the vet and monitor intake – there is no hard and fast rule as to how much the puppy will eat but generally less than 1 week old it’s between 5 and 10ml per feed
Keep the pups warm using a hot water bottle covered in a pillow case underneath a sheet or a towel and soft tactile material to cover them – place the hot water bottle to the side of their bed, thus allowing them to move to a cooler location if they are too hot. Puppies should be about 39 degrees, check their temperature using a anal thermometer
Feed approximately every 2 hours, including the night
Puppies tend to sleep through the night (from 11pm to 7am) from around 7 to 10 days old
Give the puppy small amounts of feed, ie 2 or 3 sucks of the teat then remove from the mouth and allow the puppy to swallow. Puppies tend to guzzle the food, allowing it to slip into the lungs occasionally causing infection
Massage the puppies bottom and gentiles to promote faeces and urine movement
Swelling of the belly coupled with general discomfort suggests either trapped wind or slight constipation – gently rub the belly and massage the bottom, for as long as it takes (sometimes in excess of an hour!)
Bitches are quite rough with their young so washing and massaging can be a little vigorous
Sterilize all equipment in the same way as for babies, puppies are just as susceptible to infection
Don’t allow contact with other animals – the anti-bodies of a puppy less than 2 weeks old are not fully functional at that time
At 1 to 2 weeks old, puppies can take a baby bottle
Weigh the puppy every other day to ensure weight gain – they generally double their birth weight in 2 weeks
The guideline is puppies from 2 weeks are fed every 3 hours then every 4 hours once on solid food
Puppies begin to take solid food from approximately 3 weeks old – start with liquidised puppy weaning food mixed with water and a little milk. Give the puppy bottle milk before bed (they sleep longer!)
Puppies start to walk at around 3 weeks
Puppies should be wormed at around 3 to 4 weeks but ensure a puppy worming liquid is used from the vet. Don’t use crushed up adult worming tablets

The Role of the Fosterer

Fostering for CAS can be a rewarding experience for the pet and non-pet owner alike. The main responsibility is to care for an animal as though it were your own.

CAS rely heavily on volunteers to foster animals, they ask the fosterer to keep them regularly updated with information on the animal, ie it’s weight, height and general characteristics which CAS then forward on to their website and other charities throughout Europe to enable the animal to find a permanent home. Animals can be fostered for anything from a few days up to months and can be from a few days old to years! The fosterer feeds, walks and generally includes the animal in all family activities. Dogs should be able to walk at least a little way on a leash. Many fosterers already have pets, which is not a pre-requisite but does help the animal to socialise. However, some fosterers only have foster animals, giving them the freedom to only have a part-time pet when it suits them rather than the permanent long-term responsibility of ownership. Occasionally the fosterer wants to keep the animal which is possible, if, the animal has not already been reserved by another adopter and CAS is notified immediately.

CAS try to remove animals from foster homes where the fosterer is experiencing difficulty with the dog or cat. Finding another foster home is done as quickly as possible but can’t always be achieved within the same day. Fosterers are in short supply and CAS are continually looking at ways to recruit more. CAS are currently building up a network of people to allow fosterers to temporarily house their foster pets whilst on holiday and reciprocate the arrangement with the other local fosterer.

If the foster pet becomes ill or is in need of medication, CAS will pay for vet bills but once an animal is adopted the onus is on the owner.

Some animals are re-homed here in Spain and as a result occasionally potential new owners may ask to come and view the animal. This can be done at the foster home or arrangements can be made to meet at another location. Fosterers’ telephone numbers are published on the CAS website allowing adopters to contact the fosterers directly, there is no-one else in CAS who knows the animal better than the fosterer!

All manner of people can foster, from those living in the countryside to people in towns and villages, apartments and villas. The only requirement is that the pet is cared for, fed and watered, kept warm when it’s cool and cool when it’s warm.

Temporary Foster Homes needed for two dogs. Ideally they would stay together as they are brother and sister but they are equally happy apart.

They are approx 18 months old, house trained, affectionate, exceptionally good natured and great company. They are both excellent with children and love space to run and play. However, they are not too fond of cats.

The owner has recently had a heart attack plus a subsequent heart operation but now cannot give them the attention and care they should have for the time being.

Therefore, we are looking to house them for a period of 3 – 6 months. Should you decide to keep them after this, the owner is happy to agree to this providing the dogs wish to stay!!!

Copper, Pippi and Turca arrive in Holland

Copper, Pippi and Turca arrived late yesterday night in Amsterdam. A total of 35 dogs to Holland this year. Miranda, a volunteer from Dutch charity Hond zoekt Huis flew from Amsterdam to Malaga in the morning and back to Holland in the evening with the dogs. Luckily, she had a few hours time to relax on a sunny beach.

Sometimes it is not so easy

Bingo, Blue and Ronnie flew to their new homes in Holland on Saturday night. Which makes a total of 32 dogs rehomed in Holland in 2010.
Most flights go easy, like clockwork. But this one was different.....

The plane departed with a small delay (only 15 minutes) from Malaga on it's way to Rotterdam Airport. By the time they reached their destination, a large thunderstorm prevented the plane to land so the captain decided to divert the plane to Amsterdam Airport. But by the time they reached Amsterdam Airport, the thunderstorm has also reached that airport. So the plane returned and landed in Brussels. After a two hours wait in Brussels, the plane finally arrived in Rotterdam.

A long wait for the new families, as well as for the dogs. But all is already forgotten, and everyone is happy now.

And the next number is 200 - BINGO !

Today is a day to remember!! Dog number 200 was rehomed since the start of the partnership between CAS and Hond zoekt Huis. What a fantastic achievement.

The lucky dog #200 was Bingo, who flew to Holland with dogs Blue and Ronnie. Pictures of their arrival will follow later.

Ben and Spot arrive in Holland

The dogs will be faced with a serious dilemma on Sunday. As Spanish dogs, will they cheer for Spain in the World Cup finals? Or will they join their new owners and cheer for the Dutch team?

Cages return to Spain

We’re flying 5-10 dogs per month to Holland. Most of them go in cages in the hull of the airplane.

But these cages also have to come back to CAS in

Spain

so we can use them again. These cages have more air miles than most of us !

Dutch transport company Grayvis Logistics has offered to return the cages to

Spain

in one of their regular transports. Yesterday they returned almost 20 cages, so we’re able to fly dogs to Holland again.

Missing Málaga dog turns up in Cataluña

Dexter, a dog which went missing in November last year in Málaga, has now appeared in Sant Boi in Cataluña.
Nobody has any idea how the animal covered the some 1,000 kilometres, and the animal carried a chip which was not registered in the Catalan region.

Caboodle Ranch is a 100-acre cat sanctuary created by a certain Craig Grant, in 2003. This paradise for cats is located in Ponte Vedra Beach , Florida . It is now home to over 500 happy cats.

This huge natural shelter for homeless cats is composed of lots of little houses, a city hall, a church, a water mill, ponds…

A lot of hard work for Craig Grant, but he is very happy like that with his cat army!

Stub it out! Passive smoking is harmful to pets, warns PDSA

Wednesday 11 March is National No Smoking Day and as people across the country consider stubbing out once and for all, leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is encouraging owners to consider their pet’s health when lighting up.

Research* shows cats exposed to second-hand smoke are twice as likely to develop feline lymphoma, a potentially fatal form of cancer, in smoking households. It can also make them sneeze, cough and wheeze.
Dogs are also very susceptible to smoking-related respiratory problems and their exposure to tobacco smoke has been linked to nasal and sinus cancers**.

Cigarette smoke can also be extremely harmful to pet birds, which have very sensitive respiratory systems.
“The effects of passive smoking on humans are well known, but many people don’t realise their pets are also affected by breathing in second-hand smoke,” says PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley.

“Studies have shown that animals dislike toxic fumes in their living environment, it causes their day-to-day life to become extremely unpleasant. As with people, the effects of cigarette smoke eventually take their toll on our pets, who then have to suffer the pain and distress of life-threatening cancer or chronic breathing difficulties.”

So next time your cat cuddles up to you on the sofa or your dog brings his ball for you to throw, please think about their health and don’t light up!

But it is only possible to achieve this amazing result by having a network of wonderful people who volunteer to look after a dog or a puppy for a few days or weeks until we can find permanent homes.

Paying to put animals in Kennels is no longer financially possible.
Fostering is an ideal way to have the wonderful experience of living with a dog or cat without having to own one.

People who live several months a year on the Costa del Sol and then return home, are often tempted to get a pet but know it’s impractical. Well – now it isn’t! You just have to foster and help CAS to help the animals.

Costa Animal Society - The CAS Discount Card

CAS currently has almost 300 members.
We are seeking to increase this number with the launch of our new initiative – The CAS Discount Card.
This will benefit CAS, members and the participating businesses.

How this will work for Members
CAS membership subscriptions (€35 per couple, €25 per single) are due for renewal June 1st 2010. We shall maintain the low subscription rate introduced in 2009.
Each member will receive a laminated Discount Card together with a list of all the businesses that offer discounts (5 -10%) on a wide range of goods and services.
It should not be long before members recoup the subscription price by the savings they make on restaurant and bar bills; animal food & accessories; clothes & accessories; craft & art works and many other products. Add to these services such as hair dressing & beauty; reflexology & ; motor repairs etc.
The list will be long, comprehensive and wide reaching geographically.

How this will work for Businesses
No business will be ask to pay for inclusion in the list of those offering discounts to people showing a CAS Discount Card.
The businesses will see an increase in the number of customers and also benefit from inclusion in the lists of participating businesses that will go to all CAS members and also appear on the CAS Website and the CAS Blog.
CAS will provide a window sign to show that the business is a participant in the scheme.

How this will work for CAS
Primarily by collecting many more subscriptions, but also from an increase in the pool of people who can be kept up to date on CAS activities, fund raising events and advertising.
Businesses will be asked to offer CAS Subscription Forms to clients.
It must also be said that the subscriptions may be increased in 2011 when the CAS Discount Card has proven its success!

Honey, Lulu, Mitzy and Tequila arrive in Holland

Last Sunday Honey, Lulu, Mitzy, and Tequila flew to their new homes in Holland. This makes a total of 25 dogs rehomed in Holland in 2010. See below the pictures of their arrival.

Lulu is adopted by the same family that has adopted Nico last year. See the picture below of Nico in his new home. I wonder how Lulu and Nico will divide the bed. But one thing is certain: There will be no space for the child.

Dog Heartworm Disease

Dog Heartworm disease: what is it?

Heartworm is a condition in dogs caused by a certain type of parasite. These parasites are transmitted to your pet through mosquitoes. If you are living in an area where there are lots of mosquitoes during the night, it is very important that you seriously consider heartworm prevention measures for your dog.

Heartworm is a very dangerous disease. It can kill your dog if you don’t do something about it.

The moment heartworm-transmitting mosquitoes bite your dog, the larvae will be transferred into its bloodstream. It will incubate there for several days. That’s the on-start of the disease. If left ignored, the parasites will eventually cause your pet a lot of harm. As such, it has to be treated right away.

If your dog sleeps outside in the Summer months (as mine do) I suggest you get a blood test ASAP. I had my dogs tested and one of them tested positive. This resulted in her having to take Asprin to thin the blood for 2 weeks and then 2 very painfull injections in the back muscle’s , she had to continue on the Asprin for 3 more weeks and could not go out for any walks.

Both my dogs now take monthly heartworm tablets @ €5.00 each which prevents them ever contracting it in the future.

The Costa Animal Society (CAS)

CAS was founded in 1986 as a registered charity for the sole purpose of helping abandoned and maltreated animals
Over the years, CAS has re-homed several thousand animals in the Costal del Sol region.
3 years ago, CAS linked itself with the Dutch charity, HzH, and has homed over two hundred dogs in the Netherlands. Several hundred more have gone to Germany with the help of a local German charity.

CAS is often approached by people who despair of the behaviour of some dog owners. We give as much advice as we can and we can always let people have a copy of the Andalucian Law for Animal Protection. Advice on the care of cats and kittens is also provided.
CAS has arrangements with 3 local kennels, whose owners have agreed to house abandoned & abused dogs and cats for a reduced rate. The kennel owners have a wealth of advice & information on the care of animals - freely available to the public.
All of the work of CAS is carried out by volunteers. This work includes :-
Attending to legal & bureaucratic matters, including finance; producing a large range of publications; liaising with the local press, radios, police & Town Halls; arranging fund raising events; answering telephone & email enquiries; managing the CAS Website on a daily basis; collecting dogs and cats from one location and taking them to other locations (vets, kennels, foster homes, airports etc); making jams and pickles etc. for sale; staffing the CAS Office for 3 hours per day, six days a week; liaising with Dutch and German charities as well as other local organisations; running the weekly Sunday Market Stall in Nerja; collecting and sorting clothing and bric-a-brac etc donated to CAS; processing membership applications and recruiting businesses to participate in the CAS Discount Scheme; managing the CAS Fostering Programme.

Play TAG!

CAS acts as an Information Exchange when dogs and cats are either lost or found.

Most of us know that our pets should be micro-chipped by law in Spain.

However, one cannot guarantee that a person who finds a lost pet will go to the trouble of taking that animal to a vet in order to discover if it is chipped and the owner can be contacted.

Therefore, I am appealing to everyone to buy a tag to go on the pet’s collar. This tag should have the pet’s name on one side and your phone number on the other. As an added safeguard, do as many Spanish families do, and write the name and your phone number on the inside of the collar also.

From personal experience I know the panic when one loses a pet! We were fortunate in that all our dogs wear Name & Number tags.

Also from personal experience, I know the high price charged for an engraved dog tag from one of the shops in The El Ingenio Centre, Velez Málaga. So I recommend people either buy one of the plastic tags on which one can write the information ( and keep checking it’s still legible) or – buy a blank metal tag and take it to a local jeweler who will engrave name and number for a very small fee.

Most of us think our pets will never run away – many of us know different!

Cat & Mouse

Last year we decided to take a cat, after having had dogs for over 15 years.

To us that made perfect sense as we are living in the campo. Cats will chase away rats and mice so they will stay away from the house, and also prevent them from knibbling on the irrigation system in the summer.

But how different is reality. I have never seen so many mice in our house.

Instead of chasing them away, the cat brings them home! Fully alive!

So there’s a dilemma:

Watch the cruelty and wait until the cat is finished playing with the mouse?

Or get the cat out and run the risk that the mouse is going to hide somewhere in the house?
