Oil painting for the winner of 2009 Cómpeta Scruffs

Heather Harman, President and Founder of the Society of Portrait Painters of Andalucia, presents an oil painting of Pippa - winner of the 2009 Cómpeta Scruffs Dog Show. Pippa's owner, Caroline or Taurus Estates, couldn't wait to get home and hang the painting in her home.

Pippa seemed mesmerised by it and returned on several ocassions to stare at the painting before and after the presentation.

The Nerja Scruffs will be held September 5th.
Heather will again offer to paint a portrait of the Best in Show Rescue Dog. More details from Mike 699 948 993

Responsible Dog Ownership

CAS is often approached by people who despair of the behaviour of some dog owners. We give as much advice as we can and we can always let people have a copy of the Andalucian Law for Animal Protection.

My recent complaint concerned a neighbour, living on a local Urbanisation, whose dog is allowed to run around the streets and defecate where it wishes. The owner simply opens the door and lets it out! So no “picking up” occurs.

I was able to tell the anxious enquirer, that the President of the Urbansiation can take action as allowing a dog to roam free and the failure to pick up any dog mess is ILLEGAL. Both the running free and the uncollected excrement are offenses which attract considerable fines and the local police can be required to act.

Proof: Dogs do go to heaven

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey..
She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven.
That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office.
A few days later, she asked if God had got the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, “When a Pet Dies” Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven.
Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by..
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.
By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.
Love, God

Watch That Doggy Door

Could you imagine coming home from work to find this tiny creature napping on your couch with your dog?

Guess who came home for dinner?

It followed this beagle home, right through the doggy door. This happened in Maryland recently.
The owner came home to find the visitor had made himself right at home.

Big Day for Kenai, Lola, Boni and Jacko

Today was The Day for Kenai, Lola, Boni and Jacko. They were flying to their new homes in The Netherlands.

But getting them there was a pretty stressful event this time...

The dogs were already adopted some time ago, but were awaiting a flight with which they could go. As dogs need to acompanied by a passenger, also when they fly in a cage as “luggage”, CAS is always looking for volunteers who fly to The Netherlands (or Germany). This time CAS and HzH found a volunteer, but she was flying only 2 days later.

So Thursday morning, the 2 foster families and Weston Kennels in Cómpeta were asked to take the dogs to the vet, get the passports ready, and get them chipped. One dog needed a second shot of vaccinations, so could not go. Fortunately, we found a replacement.
Anyway, after a lot of phone calls, e-mails and organizing by Jane (the VP of CAS), all dogs were ready to go.
Kenai and Boni stayed overnight, and Lola and Jacko were picked up early on Saturday morning.

But…. the reward is big. Four happy families in The Netherlands were waiting anxiously at Amsterdam airport with lots of water, cookies and attention for their new family members.

Charity night organized by The Sicilia

The Sicilia (Little Sicily) Restaurant in Torrox Costa held a charity night in aid of
CAS on Tuesday 16th June. The event was well attended and everybody
was entertained by Bobby Mac.

The restaurant very kindly donated a percentage of their takings and this, together with a raffle, raised a total of 425 € towards CAS funds !
Our thanks to Antonio and his staff.
