Scruffs 2009 has been a tremendous success. And the winners in the 12 categories were all wonderful dogs.
For next year, we want to introduce another category.
Why such an early announcement? Because it will take the dogs in this category some preparation to come up with a good show.

Homed Animals & Vet Treatments in May
What an excellent month it’s been for homing animals.
Through the new website (www.casnews.info ) we homed 13 dogs; 3 more found homes before I could even add them to the website and 12 puppies embarked on the happy lives that they never expected when they were dumped in the rubbish bins around the area! More are still waiting and hoping !!
We were equally successful in finding homes for 8 cats and 19 kittens !!!
HOWEVER…… we now have 47 kittens awaiting homes – ages range from 4 weeks upwards, all sizes, types, colours. Home One- Get One Free ☺
Vet treatments were also numerous.
To begin with – it costs CAS €29 for each injection of every puppy that we save ! Add to this the Frontline treatments, the worm tablets, the 4 bitches spayed and 2 dogs castrated and we are talking serious expenditure.
In addition, we gave many bags of dog, puppy and cat food to help fosterers and feeders.
Hence the constant pressure to raise more and more funds. Please help us help the animals.

Dangerous Dog Law
With a wave of recent publicity, people are confused about where they stand under Spain’s “dangerous dog” law. Or even which law applies to their dog.
Our first problem here is that the “potentially dangerous” list is not the same in all of Spain’s individual regions and can differ even from one town to another. When you arrive with your dog, you must enquire at the Town Hall where you live, to find out the exact local requirements which will permit you to own and walk your dog legally. Registration of the animal will be required, along with a special insurance policy.

The CAS Rapid Response Team leaps into action
People have such differing conceptions of who works as part of CAS and of what we are capable.
Some callers assume we are employees and even threatened to have us dismissed if we cannot react to their problem immediately.
Indeed, there are days when we would love to be sacked!
Basically, there are 3 or 4 volunteers who accept the responsibility of actually getting off the old bottom and helping people to help animals in the area.
I mentioned the “old bottom” and this is not exaggeration,
as (with one exception) all volunteers are well over 60 !
We need some Young Bloods to join us !
Anyone under 60 is regarded as Youthful !
So – think about volunteering to work with CAS
The animals need you !

Happy dogs - Merlin, Dippy, Noli, Lily
More pictures of happy dogs in their new homes.
Merlin, Dippy and Noli flew in May this year. Lily (now Billy) went on a plane last year.
But we will always remember Lily as the little Houdini who escaped at the airport.

Why Some Men Have Dogs And Not Wives
1. The later you are, the more excited your dogs are to see you.
2. Dogs don't notice if you call them by another dog's name.
3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.
4. A dog's parents never visit.
5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.
6. You never have to wait for a dog; they're ready to go 24 hours a day.
7. Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk.
8. Dogs like to go hunting and fishing.
9. A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, 'If I died, would you get another dog?'
10. If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and give them away.
11. A dog will let you put a studded collar on it without calling you a pervert.
12. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don't get mad. They just think it's interesting.
13. Dogs like to ride in the back of a pickup truck.
And last, but not least:
14. If a dog leaves, it won't take half of your stuff.

Fairy Tale goes true for Four at Málaga Airport
Merlin the Magician, Teletubbie Tinky-Winky, Dippy the Dumbo-eared puppy and "Beam me up" Scotti flew to their new homes in Holland.
Click through for the full story and pictures.
When we say “4 dogs flew to The Netherlands” there is a whole saga of events that preceded take-off…… this begins when we are notified that foundlings need our help – or when animals are somehow dumped on us.
We need photographs and detailed information before we can put them on our websites. Then we wait until someone shows an interest before we “pounce!” :-)
A lot of “pouncing” had preceded the booking of flights for 4 dogs to Holland on May 16th.
The very early morning flight proved one of the most complicated I’ve ever coordinated.
All dogs have to visit our vet to get a micro chip for HzH (the Dutch charity), an EU passport and any necessary vaccinations. Cages &/or travel bags have to be readied along with poo bags, extra electrician’s ties, paper bedding for the cages, collars and leashes, etc.
In a perfect case of “Sod’s Law”- (excuse me) Friday was San Isidro and so the vet & all other businesses were closed. Accordingly the dogs had to be “processed” on or before the Thursday preceding the flight.
One fosterer lived inland far to the west; another inland far to the east; the third was fostered well north of Nerja.
One of the dogs was Merlin the Magician! that Herbert & Brigitta had fostered. It was Herbert who flew to The Netherlands on a business trip and so could take the doggies.
The fun had started when I needed to organise the processing and collection of two puppies. Thanks to the idiosyncrasies of the fosterers when it came to naming dogs, this was when we embarked on the CAS version of The Teletubbies with Tinky-Winky and went Disney with Dippy the Dumbo-eared puppy.
Tinky’s foster Mum took her to the Nerja vet on the Thursday morning.
I collected Dippy from a frequent rendezvous point – the car park at the El Ingenio shopping centre. Drove him to the vet where he met Tinky.
Chips and vaccinations etc. completed, we took them home to meet our own collection of dogs. Introductions were made in the best Dog Whispering Way….. and we all relaxed……
Number 4 dog was Star Trek’s Scotti who was beamed up to El Ingenio Centre by his fosterer. She had previously taken him to the vet, so he was “hot to trot”.
Home we went with him and made the introductions etc.
As the flight was so early on the Saturday, we subsequently gathered the Fliers at the home of Herbert & Brigitta where they all settled down for a very short night’s sleep…… They took the dogs to the airport from where Herbert flew to Holland with them.
A special thanks goes to Eveline Nijman who has donated the cage to CAS that Merlin has used today. The cage will be returned to Spain and reused again for more adoptions.

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?
How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? Each breed’s answers
1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
4. Rottweiler: Make me.
5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
6. Labrador : Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb!
Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!
7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.
8. Jack Russell Terrier : I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!
10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
11. Chihuahua : Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or 'We don't need no stinking light bulb.
12. Greyhound/Saluki: It isn't moving. Who cares?
13. Heeler/Australian Cattle Dog: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
14. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?
Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is:
"How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?"
ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!

Pick up or Pay
Does my heart good to learn this:-
In Ronda, 5 people have been fined €500 each for allowing their dogs to foul the streets, parks or gardens in the town.
The fines came in the first week of a municipal crackdown on dog owners who do not respect public places.

Fund raising on Dutch Queen's Day
The Dutch owners of a bar in El Morche - Apetito - organised a Queen's Day event for the Dutch people in the Axarquia on April 30. The activities included a small flea market, where books in the Dutch language were sold. They distributed CAS publicity and collected a substantial amount for the charity. The dreadful news of the attack on the Dutch Royal Family put a damper on the celebrations but people still rallied to show support not only for Queen Beatrix and her family but also for CAS.

How CAS helped to select the Estate Agent
Kim & Julie from Wiltshire had been looking on the Internet for over 18 months for a nice property in Cómpeta.
They noticed that most houses were multi-listed on just about every estate agent´s website. Being so far away in the UK and unable to judge who they could trust from such a distance, they wondered how they could choose.
They then noticed that Sunset Properties gave a donation to CAS for every home they either sold or rented so that was it, estate agent sorted.
I guess the moral of the story is ... it pays to work with CAS.
They still think they chose wisely and have had absolutely wonderful service from Sunset Properties.
